{"id":378,"date":"2010-05-05T17:16:57","date_gmt":"2010-05-05T23:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/car-accident-rain.com\/blog\/?p=378"},"modified":"2010-05-05T17:16:57","modified_gmt":"2010-05-05T23:16:57","slug":"campaign-getting-in-gear-in-oregon-to-get-studded-tire-ban-passed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/car-accident-rain.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/campaign-getting-in-gear-in-oregon-to-get-studded-tire-ban-passed.html","title":{"rendered":"Campaign Getting In Gear In Oregon To Get Studded-Tire Ban Passed"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>It seems that the\u00a0use of studded tires has been a perennial\u00a0hot topic in Oregon.\u00a0 And the debate has been renewed.<\/p>\r\n<p>The consumer columnist for The Oregonian,\u00a0Joseph Rose, \u00a0recently wrote\u00a0about how &#8220;a citizen activist&#8221;\u00a0in the state this summer plans to\u00a0rev up a campaign to get a studded-tire ban on the 2012 ballot\u00a0in Oregon. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.oregonlive.com\/commuting\/2010\/04\/anti-studded_tires_campaign_la.html\">http:\/\/blog.oregonlive.com\/commuting\/2010\/04\/anti-studded_tires_campaign_la.html<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.oregonlive.com\/commuting\/2010\/04\/anti-studded_tires_campaign_la.html\"><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>And this initiative already has a website,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.banstuddedtires.com\/\">http:\/\/www.banstuddedtires.com\/<\/a>\u00a0, up for its campaign.<\/p>\r\n<p>The activist pushing for the anti-stud ban is Jeff\u00a0 Bernards,\u00a0who\u00a0is\u00a0 like Don Quixote in his quest to &#8220;save Oregon&#8217;s roads and budgets from senseless waste.&#8221;\u00a0But it&#8217;s apparently been a tough sell.\u00a0The state Legislature has been rejecting passing such a ban since\u00a01974.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The anti-tire stud group and Rose maintain that the studs do $40 million in damage annually\u00a0to the state&#8217;s roads,\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Another Oregon columnist, Patrick\u00a0Emerson of The Oregon Business Report, seemed amused about the brouhaha.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oregonbusinessreport.com\/2010\/05\/debated-renewed-over-studded-tire-ban-tax\/\">http:\/\/oregonbusinessreport.com\/2010\/05\/debated-renewed-over-studded-tire-ban-tax\/<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>Both Wisconsin and Minnesota ban studded tires, according to Emerson, who spent many years living in Wisconsin.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>In the case of Oregon, he cited one economist&#8217;s suggestion, which is to add a tax to studded tires to pay to repair the damage they do to roads.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0But we liked the comment that one man, who is against the stud-ban,\u00a0\u00a0put on Emerson&#8217;s blog.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s the cost of driving up\u00a099E along the river from Oregon City to Canby, spinning out on the ice and getting killed?&#8221; Matthew asked.<\/p>\r\n<p>We&#8217;re with him.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems that the\u00a0use of studded tires has been a perennial\u00a0hot topic in Oregon.\u00a0 And the debate has been renewed.
